The cost over benefit is too high.
What would be the reason you are looking at the exhaust brakes?
February 24, 2007Jacobs does not offer a system for the auto on anything but the 06 and up auto's, the do have it for the older manual trans truck.
Also, unless you are hauling a lot of weight in hill or mountains I think the cons still out weight the pros.
This is from the Jacobs web site
The Jacobs Exhaust Brake for 2005 and prior model years will not be available The 2006 Jacobs Exhaust Brake will only work with the 48RE automatic transmission when mated to the Cummins 610 (in addition to the manual transmission Rams) in the 2006 Dodge Rams. However, Dodge and Cummins will continue to offer the Jacobs Exhaust Brake for manual transmission-equipped Dodge Rams for select prior model years.
Here is a link to the Jacobs web site if you want to read up on them
February 25, 2007the jacobs brakes that they make for the 5.9 arnt what a true jake brake like on a semi is. on like the n-14's, 3406's and so forth the exhaust valves are held open. on the 5.9 it's a butterfly vavle in the elbow off the turbo. to me it's not worth the price.
March 2, 2007ya i know they dont offer it for an 05, but it will work on my new 07 , and yes i know its not a "true" jake brakes, thats why i put it as an Exhuast brake and not just "jake brake" nothing more than just a butterfly valve, just like the Blue Ox, it was the first form of an engine/exhuast brake, before the jake brake came out. they say it has 170 retarding HP, between spring-early fall i tow anywheres between 3-10000lbs, 1-8 times a week, weather it be hauling our bobcats, or our excavator attachments, our dump trailer, or salvage trailer. every one i have talked to says they love it and say its worth it. still not sure i guess
March 3, 2007Our old Volvo had pretty much the same thing on it, they do work.
March 4, 2007they are on a few cranes at work with C series and the do better than nothin. there's a place in lousiville that sells recon B's and C's with true jake brakes, but they want about 18K for a 12v.
June 25, 2012So I purchased a Jacobs exhaust brake for my 2004 Cummins recently and I was wondering if it`ll work, I`ve read up on it and there are a bunch of mixed answers, some say it works great no problems, others say it will tear up my transmission..
August 28, 2012My ISL 400 came equipped with a Jacobs exhaust brake that was about as effective as dragging one foot on the hiway but I replaced it with a Pacbrake PRXB which I purchased from my cousin. my cousin had also purchased a PRXB prior to mine and installed it on his ISL 400 in the exact same coach as mine.
